The goal of Joseph’s Sidekicks is to raise a minimum of $1.5 million to endow support for a dedicated child psychologist for the MUSC Cancer and Blood Disorder Program.
Being in the hospital can be scary, especially for a child. This stress and fear expands throughout the family, parents feel helpless and worried about the future. Siblings are torn between sadness about their sick brother or sister and frustration about the new unpredictable family schedule and loss of normalcy.
Joseph’s Sidekicks Endowment will provide critical support for psychosocial needs for pediatric cancer and blood disorder patients and families by providing funds to support a dedicated child psychologist and patient and family education programs.
Joseph’s Sidekicks will provide funding to advance the behavioral, emotional, cognitive and spiritual outcomes of the patients and families served by MUSC Children’s cancer and blood disorder program. The goal is to support the psychological needs of our patients and enhance the quality of life for the patients while undergoing treatment.
Joseph’s Sidekicks Endowment is a permanent endowment at the MUSC Foundation. It will provide critical support for psychosocial needs for pediatric cancer and blood disorder patients and families by providing funds to support a dedicated child psychologist and patient family education programs.
Some of the common needs for support include:
- Coping related to diagnosis and treatment
- Medication/treatment adherence
- Pain management
- Mood concerns such as anxiety or depression
- Body image/aesthetic concerns
- Behavioral concerns
- Pill swallowing
- Procedural anxiety/phobia
- School modifications and re-entry
